چکیده

The Eady problem of baroclinic instability as applicable to quasigeostrophic oceanic flows with zero internal PV gradients is revisited by introducing a mild slope and Ekman pumping on the lower boundary. The solution behaviour is determined by the isopycnal slope relative to either the bottom slope or the ratio of Ekman depth to horizontal wavenumber. Attention is paid to the physical interpretation of the growing, decaying and stable disturbances, with emphasis on the intimate connection between the quasigeostrophic edge waves and Eady waves, and the role of the isopycnal slope for the stability properties as opposed to the bottom density gradient. The disturbance structure is found to be strongly influenced by the boundary conditions. For a sloping bottom boundary, the growth rate is enhanced for the most unstable waves if the isopycnals tilt in the same direction as

Impact of Wind Forcing, Bottom Topography, and Inertia on Midlatitude Jet Separation in a Quasigeostrophic Model

The persistence of unrealistic Gulf Stream separation in numerical models of the ocean has prompted many theories about possible mechanisms that influence the separation of a western boundary current from the coast. In this paper, the joint effects of (a) coastline orientation, (b) bottom topography, and (c) inertia on the midlatitude jet separation are explored in a wind-driven two-layer quasi...

Estimation of salinity, heat and buoyancy budgets of the inflow coastal current into the Persian Gulf from the Strait of Hormuz

An analytical model for a coastal boundary current was used to investigate heat and salt budget of exchange flows in the Persian Gulf as a marginal sea. Coastal boundary currents exchange heat and freshwater with the mosphere and the offshore waters. As heat and salinity fluxes caused by air-sea interaction and eddy activities, different temperature and salinity associated with boundary current...

Application of Boundary Element Method to 3 D Submerged Structures With Open Ends (RESEARCH NOTE)

This paper presents a three dimensional application of direct Boundary-Element Method (BEM) for computing interaction of sinusoidal waves with a large submerged open bottom structure near the floor with finite depth. The wave diffraction problem is formulated within the framework of linearized potential theory and solved numerically with direct BEM. A computer program based on BEM is developed ...

Turbulent Mixing in Oceanic Surface and Benthic Boundary Layers

The objectives of the specific effort being reported are to improve the fundamental knowledge of turbulent mixing and diffusion processes occurring in oceanic boundary layers, with special emphases on the surface mixed layer and the wave-current boundary layer in coastal oceans. In the studies of surface mixed layers, the focus is on the penetration of a mixed layer (say, driven by the wind) in...

Geomorphic Analysis in Determining Coastal Cells and Its Role in Coastal Management (Case Study: Bandar Anzali to Chalous Coasts)

Introduction Due to the different geomorphological and morph dynamic forces of the coastal area, they form different areas. Each of these areas requires its own coastal management. While in our country, coastal management is done without considering the characteristics and coastal characteristics of each coast. In this study, in order to classify coasts and determine coastal cells, morph dynam...
